Pressley Calls for Abolishing ICE
Representative Ayanna Pressley, a member of the progressive Squad from Massachusetts, expressed her desire to dismantle Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on Sunday, labeling the agency as “racist” and “unjust.”
In an interview with MS NOW, she stated, “ICE’s actions are unconstitutional, illegal and cruel. They’re thugs, they’re racist, they’re terrorizing the community.” Pressley referred to the tragic shooting of Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis as “horrible and unacceptable.” Good died following a confrontation with ICE agents after reportedly attempting to run over one of them. While the Trump administration backed the officer involved, many Democrats argue the shooting lacked justification.
Pressley emphasized that this situation impacts all individuals, stating, “This harm is not discrimination; it comes to everyone. And that’s exactly why we have to stop ICE.” She characterized ICE as “lawless” and called it a rogue agency that poses threats to everyone, particularly the most vulnerable communities.
When questioned about whether her beliefs regarding ICE and the Biden administration’s border policies played a role in the current situation, Pressley stated that government agencies typically resist reform. “This has nothing to do with training or new protocols. This is about cultural practices that have been in place for many years,” she explained. She believes Congress should harness its financial power to address the harm caused by ICE.
Pressley asserted that many Americans feel unsafe and referred to President Donald Trump as a dictator. She reiterated her call for a thorough, independent investigation and public accountability concerning ICE, asserting that the agency should be abolished.
The White House responded to Pressley’s comments, with Press Secretary Abigail Jackson condemning them. She claimed, “Dangerous and untrue smears by elected Democrats have led to a significant increase in assaults against ICE agents. ICE agents enforce the law with the utmost professionalism and act heroically to protect American communities.” The agency did not provide comments following the statement.
Overall, Pressley’s strong stance against ICE highlights ongoing tensions surrounding immigration policies and law enforcement in the nation.
