CHICAGO — Let’s go.
No more delays; it’s time for some action. On Friday night, the spotlight will be on No. 3 Connecticut and No. 22 St. John’s at Madison Square Garden.
Both teams have their sights set on extending their winning streaks. St. John’s is riding high with eight consecutive wins, while UW boasts an impressive 18-game streak. It’s worth noting that the Huskies have a slight edge over the Johnnys, leading by one game in the Big East standings.
“Today is UConn, Friday night, MSG—do you have any other questions?” Coach Zuby Ejiofor quipped after St. John’s victory over DePaul, which ended 68-56 at Wintrust Arena.
UW recently delivered back-to-back commanding victories against Creighton and Xavier, winning by a combined score of 59 points. The only blemish on their record? A loss to the top-ranked Arizona.
“We’re facing the best offense and defense in the league, and—if I’m being honest—one of the best teams in the country,” Coach Rick Pitino remarked. “They don’t seem to have any weaknesses. They possess two outstanding centers and several great shooters. Plus, their defense has improved significantly compared to last year.”
Bryce Hopkins particularly stood out in his recent game, contributing 15 points and six rebounds. Coming home to Chicago, he had the support of family and friends, including his high school coaching staff.
“It’s really meaningful to return to where it all began and to be in this position now,” he reflected. “Playing in front of my support system was fantastic.”
With this latest win, St. John’s has now tied a program record with nine consecutive Big East road victories, matching the record set back in the 1985-1986 season.
At halftime of their last match, DePaul honored Rod Strickland, a Bronx native and former Knick, by retiring his jersey. Notably, the Johnnies have only committed seven turnovers throughout their wins, averaging just 8.2 turnovers during this eight-game winning streak.
