Lou Carnesecca was last on the St. John's Red Storm sideline more than 30 years ago, but his presence continues to be felt.
“Louie” passed away last week at the age of 99, prompting many tributes from across the college basketball world and the tri-state area.
But the St. John's legend is still fresh in the minds of many, including current head coach Rick Pitino.

During the Johnnies' game against Kansas State on Saturday, Carnesecca wore a vintage replica sweater made famous by his time at the school. It will be the school's first game since his death.
The match was held at the arena named after Carnesecca. The arena opened in 1961 and was named after the Hall of Fame coach in 2004.
Carnesecca coached St. John's for 24 seasons over two stints. He led the team to 18 seasons, with the team winning at least 20 games and 18 wins. NCAA tournament exterior. His teams produced star players such as Chris Mullin, Bill Wennington, Mark Jackson, and Walter Berry.

St. John's won the NIT Championship in 1989, and Carnesecca was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1992, the year he retired from the sport.
Carnesecca replaced Joe Lapchick before the start of the 1965-66 season. He became the head coach of new york nets He became a member of the American Basketball Association in 1970 and later returned to the team then known as the Redmen, replacing Frank Marzoff.
His best team was the 1984-85 team led by Mullin, Berry, Jackson and Wennington. They won 31 games in the Big East and reached the Final Four with a 15-1 record, but lost to Patrick Ewing's Georgetown Hoyas.

Carnesecca was 526-200 in his coaching career. He won the Big East Coach of the Year Award three times and the Basketball Writers Association of America Coach of the Year Award twice.
