St. John’s on cusp of season-long goal and history 40 years in making

Seven months ago, I first met this version of St. John's.

At that time, the bar was set very high in the middle of summer.

One of the goals was the Big East regular season championship.

That could become a reality on a Saturday afternoon, undoubtedly being a raucous Madison Square Garden. 7th place Johnny (25-4, 16-2) wins his first complete Big East title in the school since 1984-85, as he beat his local rival Seton Hall.

“This is what we talked about when we all met in July,” Cuddary Richmond said. “It's nice to feel like we're right there to take. No one is giving us it. We don't want it, we don't want it. It's up to us to get out there and take it.”

A celebration on the court is expected. It includes confetti, a trophy presentation and photos of St. John's win. However, Red Storm is not intending to cut down on garden nets.

Coach Rick Pitino didn't think he'd done it after his team won the regular season championship, and his players voted unanimously to bypass that tradition of celebration.

“It was a collective decision. Everyone agreed that it wasn't really the end of the season,” said Tori Captain Zuby Ejiofor. “We haven't really achieved many things yet. Saturday is clearly a great opportunity. We still have a marquette to worry about. [after this game]. That's just our hearts and we're taking care of our business on Saturday and moving forward. ”

Pitino said: “Whatever the player wants, I'm late – unless it's practiced.”

This focus was a major part of the group's success. He has never won the top 10 national rankings or the most wins in a school in 25 years. It's always the next game, and players often talk about their next opponent after victory. Its mature approach allowed St. John's to enjoy such a magical year.

Johnny hasn't lost in perfect force since the Big Year Day and is predicted to be the third seed. It will be their best seed since second place in the 2000 NCAA tournament. This was also the last time St. John's won a tournament game.

The foundation was set up in Pitino's first season as a coach at St. John's a year ago. The team was too late and not struggling with the NCAA Tournament. It was for six bidders, six bidders, and teams who would not have reached the dance if the team hadn't won the conference tournament.

“It was a pretty sad moment, not just for us, but for everyone. [at the school] Similarly, Egiofort said. “Obviously, seniors who haven't had the opportunity to return to college again. Now, make sure we can play for a full championship at this moment in our college career. [feels great]. ”

St. John's has become a national story of New York City's only High Major Basketball program enjoying the Renaissance under Hall of Fame coach Pitino. They will sell out the last two games in the yard against Clayton and Connecticut, potentially making their third straight full house on Saturday.

At least there were high expectations up to this level, not from outside of school, but up to this level, up until the season. Johnny was ranked in the preseason and was selected by the league coach to finish fifth in the Big East.

Nevertheless, they are taking off as a Big East class, and some experts now consider them the final four candidates. But before schools first travel to the main attraction of March's madness in the first decade, there is a regular season title to win.

“It's a great feeling to know we're right there. It's so close that we can grab that,” read RJ Luis Jr. said. “It's a great ride, it's a great season and we want to continue based on that.”
