St. John’s transfer Joson Sanon declares for NBA draft—but plans to stay with team next season

Don’t worry, Joson Sanon won’t go anywhere.

Sanon, 19, was officially declared for Saturday’s 2025 NBA Draft, but is scheduled to stay with St. John’s for the next season. Zach Brasilier in the post.

The Massachusetts native will go through a draft process to receive feedback from NBA scouts before playing his freshman season with Johnny.

NBA prospects are permitted to enter the draft while still being eligible, but they must do so without representing agents.

Sanon was the first major acquisition from Rick Pitino’s transfer portal in March, landing the guard following St. John’s season-ending loss in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

“It wasn’t that difficult to make a decision,” he posted in March in a phone interview. “It’s tough work that stands out. [Pitino] In fact, they will push you hard into the words. I want to show him that he is the hardest working player he has ever coached. ”

“I feel that’s a great place for me,” he later added. “They are [need shooting help] And I feel like I’m a good shooter and generally a good scorer. ”

The original top 25 prospects were originally registered with Arizona in July 2024 and averaged 11.9 points while shooting 42% during the Sun Devils freshman campaign.

Although it was originally a failure, St. John’s recruited Sanon from the high school and invited him to an unofficial visit in March 2024.

Sanon believes Pitino will also help him unlock his potential completely.

“The opportunity to play for him makes a lot of sense,” Sanon said. “He said he wouldn’t have the Bulls.
