Stabbing on Charlotte train: Former ESPN host urges NYC mayor to respond

Former ESPN Host Calls for Action Following Charlotte Murder

Samantha Ponder, the former ESPN personality, has urged New York City Mayor Eric Adams to take action in light of recent violent incidents, particularly the murder of Iryna Zarutska in Charlotte.

Ponder shared her thoughts on social media, reacting to the tragic case involving DeCarlos Brown Jr., who is accused of stabbing a woman on a light rail train. There are discussions about pursuing the death penalty for Brown.

Ponder emphasized the urgency of the situation, saying that people like Brown should not be allowed to roam freely. She expressed her concerns about safety, particularly since she regularly takes the subway with her three children. “Every day, I encounter individuals who are clearly unwell and violent,” she commented in her post.

She continued, “The disturbing video of Iryna’s murder has only reinforced my belief that we need to find a way to keep these individuals off our streets. Our local leaders and judges seem to show false empathy towards those with mental health issues, but it’s not safe for career criminals to be at large.”

Ponder also addressed various reactions to her post, emphasizing that the situation in Charlotte is indicative of broader issues in cities across the country. “I don’t really understand how you live with that sort of danger. Why expose your family to such violence?” she pondered.

She brought up other cities facing similar challenges, including questions about whether places like Auburn, Alabama, or Athens are also experiencing these problems. “This isn’t just a localized issue—it’s happening everywhere,” she noted.

In a more personal reflection, Ponder recounted her own traumatic childhood experience in Arizona, which added weight to her argument against moving somewhere else as a solution to violence. “What should I do, just forget? There are just so many stories like mine,” she wrote.

Brown was apprehended shortly after the stabbing incident and has been charged with first-degree murder. Recent records show Brown has a lengthy criminal history dating back over ten years, including various felonies. After multiple incarcerations, he was released on parole but recently faced additional charges earlier this year related to misusing emergency services.

Ponder’s remarks come amidst statements from former President Donald Trump, who has called for reforms such as ending cashless bail in response to rising crime rates.
