Stanford students are required to fill out a “Diversity and Inclusion Statement” to enroll in marketing classes offered by the School of Management Science and Engineering.
The friendly staff at The College Fix Revealed On Tuesday, Stanford students were required to answer how they would contribute to diversity as a prerequisite for applying to a Global Entrepreneurial Marketing class offered by the School of Management Science and Engineering.
“Diversity is an important part of Stanford's Master of Science program and the mission of this class,” the statement reads. “Please use this opportunity to explain how you will contribute to a culture of diversity and inclusion in this class.”
Online Course Description Warn Because places are limited, “students who wish to enroll in this course will go through a screening process and will be notified of their decision prior to the start of the course.”
Screenshots of the diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) requirements were provided by a Stanford undergraduate student, who asked to remain anonymous to avoid “retaliation from the Stanford community.”
“There is a culture of fear on campus, with many undergraduates attempting to silence, shame and silence any opinion they don't like,” the student said.
“Furthermore, professors and faculty wield power in the classroom, and many use this power to suppress dissent, critical questions and non-conformists,” the student added.
“I find it extremely disappointing and disturbing that Stanford Engineering has started requiring students to submit a DEI pledge to register for classes. Stanford has become known for breaking norms and traditions, not for enforcing conformity and groupthink,” the student said.
As expected, the application provides five response options to a seemingly simple question asking about a student’s gender: “Male,” “Female,” “Gender atypical/non-conforming,” “Other,” and “Refuse to answer.”
As of May 2023, Stanford employs approximately 200 DEI staff members.
