Star soccer goalie Matija Sarkic dead at 26

LONDON (AP) — Matija Sarkic, the Montenegrin goalkeeper who played for English second division club Millwall, has died aged 26.

Millwall announce No further details were released about Sarkic’s death on Saturday.

Sarkic’s most recent appearance for Montenegro was a 2-0 loss to Belgium on June 5. It was Sarkic’s ninth international appearance, according to the Montenegro Football Federation.

Millwall said: “Everyone at the club sends their love and condolences to Matija’s family and friends at this very sad time.”

“The club will not comment further at this time and asks that the privacy of Matija’s family be respected.”

Sarkic made 33 appearances for London club Millwall after joining from Premier League side Wolverhampton in August last year.

He played for Anderlecht’s youth academy in Belgium and then spent five years at Aston Villa in England before leaving to join Wolves in 2020. He has also had loan spells at lower-league English clubs such as Birmingham and Stoke.
