Cam Schritler Withdraws from All-Star Game
In a surprising turn, Cam Schritler, who was slated to start the American League All-Star Game, has opted out of pitching entirely.
A day after delivering a stellar performance on the mound, covering 6 2/3 innings with a 2.05 ERA, the Yankees’ ace voiced some concerns to manager Aaron Boone about participating in the Tuesday exhibition at Citizens Bank Park.
Physically, Schritler is fine, but Boone noted that the 25-year-old right-hander is choosing to concentrate on the remainder of the season with the Yankees instead of possibly pitching during the All-Star Game.
“I think there was a bit of anxiety about throwing at peak intensity right after a recovery day,” Boone explained on Sunday at Nationals Park. “I fully support his decision. He realizes what’s at stake for both himself and the team in the second half. So, I definitely back him on this.”
Tuesday was initially planned as Schritler’s bullpen day, but he’ll now revert to his usual routine, likely gearing up for next weekend’s big match against the Dodgers at Yankee Stadium. He still plans to enjoy the All-Star festivities in Philadelphia with teammates Ben Rice and Cody Bellinger.
Having already pitched 118 2/3 innings over 20 starts this season, Schritler is on pace to easily surpass his previous career high of 149 2/3 innings from last year. Boone insists that there are “no issues” with his health, but some of Schritler’s choices seem to reflect a long-term strategy.
“Honestly, I’m not overly concerned about it,” Schritler said when asked about playing in the All-Star Game. “There are bigger things we need to focus on with our team right now.”
When Schritler discussed his decision with Boone on Sunday morning, the manager made sure the young pitcher had thoroughly considered the implications of his choice. Yes, Schritler will likely get more opportunities in future All-Star Games, but there’s no certainty about that—and he might miss out on a starting opportunity that he was nearly guaranteed on Tuesday.
“I asked him if he had thought about this decision and he assured me he had,” Boone remarked. “So, I’m comfortable with it. I want him to be sure he’s not just making a rash decision. He’s healthy, feeling good, but it’s important that he really thinks through why he made this choice. We completely support him.”
