Last month, the Supreme Court ruled in Starbucks’ favor, making it harder for the federal government to win court orders if it suspects a company is interfering in the unionization process.
The case stems from a labor dispute with Starbucks, which fired seven Memphis workers for participating in union organizing efforts. The Supreme Court overturned a lower court ruling that had required the workers to be reinstated.
After considering his own independent run, former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz publicly endorsed President Biden ahead of the 2020 presidential election. Schultz emphasized the importance of democracy and voting during the last election.
Schultz testified before the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee in 2023 about the company’s union-busting activities.
The coffee company’s current CEO, Lakshman Narasimhan, took up the role in March 2023. As part of his leadership role, Narasimhan has committed to working as a barista in stores across the country once a month.
With the company’s revenue falling 2% in the first quarter of 2024, Schultz stressed that his successor and Starbucks need to get back to basics.
