Starmer on Iran: 'This is Not Our Conflict'

Keir Starmer Affirms UK’s Non-Participation in Iran Conflict

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has made it clear that Britain will not support the US and Israel in their efforts concerning Iran, despite any external pressures.

He stated that while the UK military will protect its own interests and people in the Middle East, it will not become entangled in a conflict with Iran.

Starmer’s remarks came during a speech that kicked off Labour’s local election campaign ahead of the May 7 vote. Although matters of international politics typically don’t dominate local election discussions in the UK—where issues like waste collection and road maintenance take precedence—there’s an evident ethno-religious dimension to British politics today, raising concerns about a growing trend of sectarianism.

For numerous voters, a significant worry when voting is ensuring that the government refrains from military actions against Muslim nations. Some Labour MPs share this concern, fearing they might lose their positions to parties focused solely on this issue.

Speaking in Wolverhampton on Monday, Starmer emphasized that his government would not partner with the US and Israel in attempts to curb Iran’s influence. He stated this resolve would remain steadfast regardless of who pressures them, asserting:

We are facing a war on two fronts: the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which has persisted for over four years, and the situation with Iran, which understandably causes anxiety. People see the destruction and escalating tensions on their screens and naturally worry about what might come next. It’s crucial to state clearly that this is not our war, and we will not engage in it.

While Starmer has consistently adopted an anti-war stance and criticized President Trump’s decisions, the UK government has recently softened its non-involvement strategy. Initially, US forces were restricted from using major UK air bases, but now they are reportedly launching operations from England daily. Additionally, the British government is preparing for potential deployments to the Gulf region while maintaining that it won’t risk its warships until hostilities cease.
