A Florida couple was chased by an alligator while riding a golf cart, as seen in recent footage.
The video, taken by bystander Dennis Prouse, shows the alligator roaming through a residential area in Ave Maria, Florida, on February 16th.
The reptile was facing the pond when the couple drove by in their golf cart.
The crocodile was then seen to open its jaws and charge at the couple, before the car swerved and nearly overturned into the water.
The man and woman fled the scene and the alligator entered the pond.
Prouse can be heard saying “Oh my god” as he records the horrifying footage.
“I heard a noise in the backyard and looked up to see the alligator slowly walking between the houses,” Pleuse told Storyful. “I was on the phone, so [I] I quickly switched to video. ”
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) website has advice on how residents of the Sunshine State can protect themselves from alligator attacks.
“If you are in or near fresh or brackish water, be aware that alligators may be present,” says a pamphlet on the FWC’s website. “Bites can occur if you do not pay close attention to your surroundings when working or recreating near water.”
Despite unwanted encounters with residents in Florida, alligators rarely cause serious injuries, the agency said.
If you see an alligator that may pose a threat to residents, you are encouraged to call 866-392-4286.
“In general, alligators less than 4 feet long are not large enough to be dangerous unless handled,” the FWC advises.
