State Democrat's Fund Grows as Republicans Attempt to Overcome Trump

John Ossoff’s Reelection Campaign Boosts Fundraising Efforts

Senator John Ossoff, a Democrat from Georgia, is ramping up fundraising as he prepares for a challenging midterm election. On Thursday, his campaign announced it raised over $10 million in the second quarter of its funding cycle. This financial surge comes amidst turmoil within the GOP, particularly following the bail release of Republican Governor Brian Kemp and Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution was the first to report these fundraising figures, revealing that Ossoff’s campaign ended the second quarter with $15.5 million in the bank. The average donation during this period was about $32, and support came from nearly every corner of Georgia, with contributions from all but three of the state’s 159 counties.

Senate Republicans view Ossoff’s seat as a prime target for flipping, aiming to increase their majority to 53 during the midterms. Ossoff is often seen as the most at-risk Democratic senator seeking reelection, given Georgia’s rightward shift and Donald Trump’s previous support in the state.

Interestingly, Ossoff hasn’t shown any inclination to shift towards the political center. He has actively collaborated with other Democrats to oppose legislation that would prevent biological men from participating in women’s sports and has resisted moves to advance Trump-era tax cuts.

Currently, Republican candidates in the state include Rep. Buddy Carter and Georgia’s Insurance Secretary, John King, who both have entered the primary race. Carter ended the second quarter having raised about $1.1 million and contributed another $2 million from his own funds.

With still some time before the primary, more Georgia Republicans might jump into the race, especially as party leaders and national committees have yet to solidify their candidates to take on Ossoff.

Another potential contender, Rep. Mike Collins, indicated he might be eyeing a Senate run. He stated in a recent social media post that running for the Senate wasn’t part of his original plan but recognized the necessity of stepping up.

Ossoff’s campaign manager, Ellen Foster, expressed confidence in their fundraising and grassroots support, emphasizing that these contributions are vital to their success moving forward.
