State Department Dismisses 1,300 as Trump Cuts Down 'Oversized' Government

On Friday, the U.S. State Department announced a major restructuring that results in the termination of over 1,300 employees, part of an effort by President Trump’s administration to reduce government expenditure.

According to senior officials, as reported by the Associated Press, layoff notifications are being delivered to approximately 250 foreign service members along with 1,107 civil servants and U.S. officials.

“Those foreign service workers affected will be placed on a 120-day administrative leave before officially losing their positions,” the AP reported, citing an internal memo.

The memo explains that, “In light of departmental restructuring, we are optimizing domestic operations to concentrate on diplomatic priorities. Reductions have been strategically planned to target non-essential functions, overlapping offices, and areas where efficiency can be achieved through centralization or merging of functions.”

A report from WUSA 9 noted that these changes are drawing attention, stating, “While there are layoffs involved, the program also includes voluntary departures through management’s acquisition initiative.”

In an April statement, Secretary of State Marco Rubio mentioned that officials are implementing Trump’s agenda by initiating significant changes within the department.

As the report continued, Rubio indicated, “Today marks a significant shift. Under @Pothos’ guidance and my direction, we are actively addressing years of waste and bureaucracy within the State Department. These bold changes empower our skilled diplomats to prioritize America and its citizens.”

Rubio’s comments also pointed out that the current structure of the department is inefficient and unable to fulfill crucial diplomatic roles amid global competition. He noted that the State Department has faced “unprecedented growth” while delivering “ineffective diplomacy.”

“I am therefore releasing a comprehensive reorganization plan aimed at modernizing the department for the 21st century. This strategy will reinforce the department from its core to every embassy,” he added.

The news about the layoffs follows a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that permits Trump to move forward with federal workforce reductions, as reported by Breitbart News.

In an 8-1 decision, the Supreme Court stated, led by Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, that they “do not adjudicate the legality of any specific reorganization plan.”

According to Reuters, many of the reorganization measures had already been implemented, but the State Department had been awaiting guidance from the Supreme Court on these matters.
