State Department to Lay Off 2,000 Employees

The State Department is set to begin layoffs affecting around 2,000 employees this Friday as part of a reorganization effort. An internal memo from Michael Rigas, the assistant secretary of management and resources, indicated that domestic employees impacted by this reduction will be informed in the coming days.

This decision is expected to impact nearly 1,800 individuals, with overall cuts during the Trump administration reaching about 15% of the workforce. The aim is to streamline operations across various sectors and offices within the Department.

Officials expressed concerns that the growth of domestic offices over the past 25 years has complicated the Department’s ability to respond efficiently to new global challenges. They noted the existence of over 700 national offices for a workforce of around 18,000 people, which has led to overlaps and inefficiencies.

In addition, State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce warned that the agency intends to act quickly, especially after the Supreme Court upheld a lower court’s ruling that temporarily halted broader troop reductions in the federal agency.

The restructuring plan, as described by officials, will consolidate redundant offices and shift certain functions to local and overseas departments. This, they believe, will empower those closest to diplomatic efforts to carry out the president’s foreign policy effectively.

Amid concerns regarding the layoffs, senior officials have reiterated their commitment to treating affected employees with dignity and ensuring they receive the necessary resources during this transition.

Currently, there are no announced plans to close embassies or military bases overseas, as efforts will be made to uphold the integrity and dignity of those impacted. “We’re going to work to maintain the dignity of federal workers,” one official emphasized.
