Texas Rep. Gene Wu, a Democratic House leader, is facing criticism from conservatives following the re-emergence of a video where she encourages unity among different racial groups against a shared “oppressor.”
The video, which has gone viral, is from a December 31, 2024 episode of the podcast “Defining American” hosted by Antonio Vargas, highlighting the immigration context in Texas.
In the discussion, Vargas emphasized the importance of Texas in shaping America’s future and prompted Wu for her perspective. She pointed out that a major factor influencing current political dynamics, especially around immigration, is the anxiety among “white” Americans about becoming a minority.
“What concerns me,” Wu stated, “is that the surge in anti-immigrant sentiment is driven by sheer white nationalism.” She elaborated on the belief that America is destined for white rule, suggesting that the progress of immigrants or minority groups is often perceived as a threat.
Both Vargas and Wu noted that in Texas, white residents are either already a minority or nearing that status, but Wu indicated that they still make up the majority of voters. The conversation then veered towards the interaction between Latino-majority areas and the relationships among immigrant communities.
“You’re exactly right,” Wu responded, “It’s not just about Latinos, Asians, or African Americans; it’s about all of us. We’ve been misled into seeing each other as rivals rather than allies, which is where the real power lies.” She believes that unity among these groups could lead to significant social change, asserting that they hold the majority in the country now.
After these remarks re-surfaced online, Wu faced significant backlash from fellow Texans.
Texas Attorney General, Ken Paxton, remarked that Wu’s views reflect a radical stance against a substantial portion of the Texan population. Former Texas Republican Party Chairman, Matt Rinaldi, condemned Wu’s sentiments as extreme and suggested that her position in the Democratic Party embodies its underlying biases.
Senator Ted Cruz added that the Democratic Party is fundamentally flawed in its approach. Rep. Chip Roy also called for Wu’s resignation, citing her remarks as divisive.
In the wake of the criticism, Wu attempted to clarify that she was referring to the Republican Party, rather than implicating all white individuals. Evan Mintz from the Houston Chronicle reported that Wu’s earlier comments did mention “white people” but shifted her focus to the Republican Party as the oppressor in her follow-up statements.
“The Republican Party has repeatedly undermined these communities over the last fifty years,” Wu conveyed. Interestingly, some Republicans acknowledged Wu’s perspective, criticizing her for dividing groups in the first place.
Wu’s office has yet to respond to requests for further comment.
