Hero Dog Honored with Statue in Venezuela

A remarkable dog, who is credited with rescuing at least 26 individuals during the earthquakes that struck Venezuela earlier this year, has been recognized with a large bronze statue to celebrate his life-saving achievements.

The 8-year-old Border Collie, named Tsunami, worked alongside his handler Jorge Beens to rescue numerous people, marking this as the dog’s final mission before retirement, as reported by a local outlet.

Both Tsunami and Beens were present for the statue’s unveiling, radiating pride after playing a pivotal role in helping their community during a time of great tragedy.

One social media user remarked, “And the dog was present for the unveiling? More news like this, please.” Another commenter emphasized, “This ceremony is exactly as it should be. Animals need to be recognized for their hard work and dedication too.”

The Colombian magazine Semana described in June how Tsunami is part of a dedicated local search and rescue team focused on finding survivors. Beens, the founder of a Venezuelan canine search and rescue organization, shared that Tsunami had faced significant challenges in his early life, having been rescued from an abusive environment.

After receiving the necessary medical care and support, Tsunami underwent specialized training which prepared him for search and rescue operations. Over time, he has shown exceptional skills in locating people and operating efficiently in complicated scenarios.

His acute sense of smell, combined with his training, enables him to search hard-to-reach areas in collapsed buildings where survivors might be trapped.

Reflecting on Tsunami’s journey, Semana noted, “His story highlights the need for the adoption and rehabilitation of animals that have suffered abuse. What was once a vulnerable dog in need of help has transformed into a symbol of the positive change that dedicated care and patience can bring to animal welfare.”
