Steelers are altering strategy after Kaleb Johnson's mistake on the kick return

Caleb Johnson Faces Setback with Steelers

Caleb Johnson, a rookie for the Steelers, will not return kicks in the upcoming game against the Patriots. This decision follows a costly mistake he made in week two, which led to a touchdown for the Seahawks.

Pittsburgh’s head coach, Mike Tomlin, expressed his continued belief in Johnson’s abilities during a press conference. “I definitely see potential in him,” Tomlin said. “He’s intelligent and works hard. You always want to keep the door open for someone like that, but it ultimately comes down to his performance.” He underscored the need for Johnson to prove himself each day as he aims to regain his spot on the team.

During the previous game, Johnson made an error when he let a kickoff bounce back into the end zone. A reminder, I guess, that anything landing between the 20-yard line and the end zone can still be live. That mistake allowed Seattle’s George Holani to recover the ball for six points.

In the aftermath of the defeat, which ended 31-17, Johnson took accountability: “I simply made a mistake. I’m working on getting better every day.” However, Tomlin didn’t specify who might take over the kicking duties while Johnson works to rebuild trust with the coaching staff.

The Steelers have added kick returner Trey Salmon, who has previous experience, and receiver Roman Wilson—who performed well in college at Michigan—to the roster. Tomlin mentioned that while he wants Johnson to compete for his position, nothing is guaranteed.

As he noted, “People need to recognize their errors and strive to improve. That’s part of growth. My role as a coach is to give them those chances.” He also reminded everyone that actions speak louder than words, emphasizing the need for consistent effort and attention to detail in the approaching week.
