Steelers safety Cam Sutton suspended 8 games for alleged domestic incident

Cam Sutton will miss the first eight games of the NFL season after violating the league’s personal conduct policy.

The Pittsburgh Steelers safety was suspended by the league after his arrest in March on suspicion of domestic violence strangulation, a third-degree felony that can lead to up to five years in prison.

Sutton turned himself in to police on March 31. According to authorities, officers responded to a call of a domestic violence incident between Sutton and a woman around 5 a.m. on March 7. The sheriff’s office asked for the public’s assistance in locating Sutton.

After turning himself in to authorities, and the charges were reduced from felony to misdemeanor assault, Sutton entered a pretrial diversion program in April. An agreement with prosecutors required Sutton to undergo a mental health evaluation.

After six years in Pittsburgh, Sutton signed a three-year, $30 million contract with the Detroit Lions before the start of the 2023 season. However, the Lions released Sutton after the alleged incident, and Sutton returned to Pittsburgh in June on a one-year contract. In 2023, he recorded a career-high 65 tackles and an interception.

Sutton participated in organized team activities and minicamp, but did not provide details about what led to his arrest or what punishment the NFL may impose if it finds he violated the NFL’s personal conduct code.

“Adversity comes to everyone in life,” Sutton said the day he signed with the Steelers, “so it’s all about how you handle it, how you overcome it and know who you are as a person and don’t let other people dim your light.”
