The United Steelworkers union is likely to endorse President Joe Biden for the 2024 election, and the union plans to make an endorsement decision in the coming weeks.
Union President David McCall said Tuesday that support for former President Trump is inconsistent with what happened during his first administration.
“[A Trump presidency] It didn’t go very well last time,” McCall said. fox news interview Tuesday. “He put a lot of anti-union people into government.”
McCall added that Trump has not contacted him and the former president’s campaign has not even responded to an inquiry into the matter.
The statement came after Biden opposed the sale of U.S. Steel to a Japanese conglomerate. The president said it was “critically important” that the giant industry remained domestically owned, drawing praise from unions.

This move would be in line with Mr. Biden’s emphasis on labor unions. Biden has called himself “the most pro-union president in American history,” and last year he took his first action by joining striking autoworkers on picket lines in Michigan.
He has already won support from major labor groups including the United Auto Workers, Service Employees International Union and AFL-CIO after a brief spat over electric vehicle subsidies.
SEIU announced last week that it would spend $200 million on advertising for the president’s re-election campaign, one of the largest pledges by a labor group.
“In this election, workers will be voting for candidates who have support at the top and bottom of the polls,” SEIU Executive Vice President Rocio Saenz said in a statement. “They are ready to support candidates like President Biden who have walked the picket lines, taken on big business, and invested in good union jobs.
But the Biden campaign has been trying to persuade the Teamsters union without much success. Unusually for a labor group, the Teamsters have shown generosity toward both presidential candidates, even donating $45,000 to the Republican National Committee, according to FEC filings.
The RNC claims it hasn’t received the funds, and the union still donates hundreds of thousands of dollars to Democratic causes, but the donations are dwarfed by labor groups that have almost uniformly supported Mr. Biden over Mr. Trump. This may indicate a significantly abnormal value within the range.
The president met with Teamsters executives last week as the union also considers player nominations for 2024.
