Rep. Elise Stefanik (RN.Y.) is threatening to overturn the New York governor’s race as he is considering taking on Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) next year.
Stefanik hasn’t confirmed that she’s still running, but the chances she might jump in already make the Imperial State GOP primary, where Rep. Mike Lawler (RN.Y.) was considered the most likely option for a GOP nomination.
Republicans say they recognize the difficult battles Stefanik may have at Blue’s base and want to avoid the divisive primary between President Trump’s top alliance, Lawler and Stephanik. Still, many of the parties remain optimistic that they can elicit agitation after breaking into 2022.
“In terms of fundraising organizations and the ability to convey a clear, concise message, there are no Republicans in New York that can do it like Elise Stefanik,” said New York Republican strategist Bill Cortez. “From her entire career, she beat the odds and delivered. I think that’s why you saw her meteor rise in Washington.”
Stefanik was first elected to represent New York’s 21st Congressional District in 2014, turning her district red after Democrats held seats for five years. She eventually stood up and became one of Trump’s top allies on Capitol Hill and chairman of the House Republican Congress. This is the fourth highest ranked Republican.
Her profile rose further in late 2023 due to her questioning of the three presidents’ treatment of Palestinian protests on campus, establishing her position as Israel’s top supporter. She was scheduled to become Trump’s UN ambassador, but her political future looked uncertain after her nomination was drawn out after being given concerns about the narrow Republican House majority later last month.
However, reports of her potential governoral candidates have promptly energised Republicans over the past few days, hoping she will bring attention to the entire state of her hometown.
Stefanik said he would not rule out anything in her future, including a run to governor, and sounded like a candidate during a New York GOP dinner Tuesday evening while railing with Hochul, who struggled with her positive reviews.
She said she was honored to be mixed with other possible candidates, and caused more speculation. post On social media on Wednesday, she pointed to the vote she said, “We can beat New York and save it.”
Some Republicans said that Stefanik would clear the Republican field if she was running because she was gaining strong popularity.
A GOP official said Stephanik is New York’s most popular and most funded Republican official and is obliged to consider running her district and Republicans.
Daivd Laska, communications director for the New York GOP, calls Stefanik a “Republican superstar” and becomes a “stolen” candidate.
John Faso (RN.Y.), a Republican candidate for governor in 2006 and former MP who sat next to Stefanik at a GOP dinner, said Stefanik is likely to be the candidate’s “most famous person in the state” based on events over the past year.
However, Stefanik as a candidate will be a noticeable change as Roller appeared to be on a clear trajectory of the nomination just a week ago.
Lawler is another popular Republican who built his own reputation as a moderate who won a tough battlefield district in November despite being the Democrat’s highest goal. He seemed poised to play more and more offenses at Hochul and take part in the race.
Laurel praised Stefanik in a statement, calling her a “strong leader” and playing a key role in leading the conference.
“We both agree that Kathy Hochul is America’s worst governor. “In 2026, New Yorkers have the opportunity to elect strong and capable leaders to move the nation for the better. In the coming months, a process will unfold to ensure Republicans have the strongest candidate possible.”
Nassau County executive Bruce Blakeman also cast himself as a strong supporter of Trump, but was probably another rumored candidate trying to run to the right of the roller.

Meanwhile, Democrats say they are not too worried about Stephanik’s running and are hoping for a competitive primary that focuses on candidates getting coveted and influential support from Trump.
“Elise Stefanik, Mike Lawler and Bruce Blakeman are all jockeys for Donald Trump’s support and are loyal to the agenda of his touch above in New York,” said New York Democratic spokesman Addison Dick.
Hochul I said The GOP candidate, whoever it is, will become an “extreme Maga Republican” and reports that she is looking forward to the fight.
The governor recently took on a bigger national profile in opposition Trump. The vote suggests that at least the Democratic bases want to see more from their leaders.

“To be President of Donald Trump doesn’t give the Albany Democrats an excuse for failing to deliver. We’ve seen the votes down the race all the way down… The Donald Trump factors have always remained some kind of problem, but it’s not a big drug that everyone likes to think about,” he said.
He pointed to improvements that Trump had in 2024 in the state, and even in the Bronx.
However, Republican strategist Jay Townsend has expressed caution about candidates like Stephanik.
“Elise’s trouble comes after she wins the nod at the party.
However, he speculated that even if Stefanik ran and lost, her politicians would likely be on the upside so she could then join the Trump administration.
“It’s a bit of a safety net for her,” he said.
