Stellan Skarsgård Supports Cameron’s View on Netflix and Oscars

Acclaimed actor Stellan Skarsgård, known for roles in Good Will Hunting and Dune, has weighed in on the ongoing debate over Netflix’s eligibility for Academy Awards. In a recent interview on the red carpet, he expressed agreement with director James Cameron, who believes that Netflix films should require a significant theatrical release to qualify for an Oscar.

When asked about Cameron’s statement regarding Netflix movies, Skarsgård commented, “That’s a valid point. Absolutely. I mean, they should wait, because that’s the only way to keep theaters alive. Without movies, there’s no Netflix.” His sentiments reflect a concern for the future of cinemas.

As reported earlier, Cameron not only opposes Netflix’s Oscar nominations but also labeled the streaming service’s approach to theatrical releases as “rotten to the core.” He argued that any film meaningfully shown in 2,000 theaters for a month should be eligible for awards.

Back in 2019, renowned director Steven Spielberg also expressed skepticism about Netflix’s standing in the film community, suggesting that such films should be categorized as TV movies. He stated, “Once we commit to the television format, it becomes a television movie.” Spielberg argued that while deserving films may earn Emmys, they shouldn’t be considered for Oscars if they had limited theatrical runs.

As it stands, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has not announced any intention to revamp its rules, so Netflix may not be required to extend its theatrical distribution for Oscar consideration. Interesting industry speculation suggests that a potential acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery by Netflix could pave the way for a more established theatrical presence.

Bank of America Global Research noted that if Netflix acquires Warner Bros., it could signify a substantial shift in the streaming landscape, potentially bringing an end to the so-called “streaming wars.” They highlighted that the extensive library from Warner Bros. would give Netflix a depth in content that it currently lacks.
