After a few days of intense discussions, Stephanie White hit her limit on Tuesday.
During a recent game against the Sky, Fever guard Sophie Cunningham was ejected after a rough foul from Dijonai Carrington. This incident quickly shifted the focus away from basketball to a loud minority criticizing White for her inability to protect her players, especially during the postgame press conference.
This led to White’s pregame press conference before the match against Liberty, where she spoke for nearly two and a half minutes, trying to address the narratives spinning on social media. In a heartfelt moment, she expressed her commitment to safeguarding her players, tackling the negativity that’s been flooding the conversation.
“This isn’t really about the folks in this room,” White said. “It’s more about a community online trying to spin a narrative that isn’t there. They’re creating distortions about me. Player success and safety are always my top priorities. I pride myself on my relationship with the players. For anyone keen to comment on last game, I didn’t catch it live; I went straight to the press conference. Luckily, I thought Sophie was alright.”
“Was it a horrible play? For sure,” she added. “Watching the replays made that clear, but it wasn’t evident in real-time. I do take it personally when I can’t always have my players’ backs. I’m fully in it with them. They know I’m there for them. It’s a pity they don’t get more attention for the great basketball they’re playing, because they’re really doing well.”
“The truth is, I will always coach with love, grace, humility, and integrity. That doesn’t guarantee results. I’m human too, and those who think otherwise probably won’t succeed. We are united; we won’t be split apart. I’m committed to supporting them every day.”
White chose not to answer any questions afterward and exited the room, which also made a statement in itself. Team president Kelly Krauskopf publicly supported her as well.
“Coach White has been exceptional in leading the Fever to the playoffs for the second year in a row. She’s kept our team focused and united, even amidst significant attention on our team and league. She has our full backing.”
It’s a bit unclear what exactly spurred White to speak out specifically at this moment. There’s always noise surrounding the Fever, and even a small group can make a huge impact on the conversation.
The Fever has faced their share of small situations blowing up into major stories this season, especially with the addition of Caitlin Clark and the resulting scrutiny on the team.
However, White highlighted that this comes during a successful stretch for the Fever. Their recent win marked their 10th in the last 14 games, boosting their record to 20 wins and 12 losses, with only the Valkyries, Lynx, and Mystics having better records heading into July.
Indiana is playing some of its best basketball of the season as the postseason approaches, and for White, the focus is on that rather than the surrounding chatter.
