Smith Critiques Kimmel’s Suspension Over Free Speech

Stephen A. Smith from SiriusXM expressed frustration about the different standards of free speech that he perceives, particularly regarding liberal talk show host Jimmy Kimmel compared to conservatives.

Kimmel faced a suspension from ABC on September 17, following comments he made on September 15 about the assassination of Turning Point USA’s founder, Charlie Kirk. As a result, “Jimmy Kimmel Live” will not be airing indefinitely. Smith supported the criticism surrounding Kimmel’s suspension, pointing out what he sees as a lack of concern from the left during similar situations involving Fox News, especially when the Biden administration was accused of censoring online discourse.

Smith commented, “Did we say anything when Tucker Carlson was taken off the air by Fox News? What about Greg Gutfeld? There’s inconsistency in how responses vary between the left and right on these issues.” He emphasized that inconsistency in approaches to free speech is troubling.

He went on to explain his stance: “The goal is to assess facts and indicate what’s right or wrong. Hypocrisy emerges when double standards are evident.”

On September 23, Alphabet revealed that Biden administration officials pressured the House Judiciary Committee to remove content they labeled as “misinformation.” This follows earlier claims made by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg about aggressive actions from the administration aimed at his company related to the suppression of misinformation on COVID-19.

Some critics have suggested that former President Donald Trump influenced Kimmel’s suspension. Kimmel returned to his show on Tuesday without issuing an apology for his earlier monologue. Interestingly, he previously celebrated Carlson’s firing, referring to it as a “fun shock.”
