Stephen A. Smith Disputes Idea That Trump Was Treated Like Royalty

Stephen A. Smith Challenges “King” Narrative on Trump

On Monday, ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith pushed back against claims that President Donald Trump is acting like a king, especially in light of recent “king” protests aimed at opposing what demonstrators term authoritarianism. Smith pointed out that the numerous legal challenges faced by the Trump administration demonstrate that American democracy is functioning, rather than suffering under tyranny.

During a segment, Smith questioned the motivation behind the protests, which include opposition to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). He noted that legal actions, such as California’s lawsuit against the Trump administration regarding the deployment of the National Guard in Los Angeles during anti-ICE protests, highlight a system of checks and balances at work.

“People calling him ‘king’ need to realize he’s not a dictator. That’s why there are lawsuits against him,” Smith stated. He went on to emphasize that failures in court for the administration indicate the judicial system is functioning rightly.

California’s lawsuit, initiated earlier in June, sought to challenge Trump’s actions, and a judge had blocked the National Guard’s deployment, although this decision was temporarily suspended pending a further hearing.

“Last I checked, if you’re in power, you try to assert your authority, but when people challenge you, they can succeed through the court system. That shows our democracy is intact,” Smith added. He further remarked that while Trump might not be acting precisely as he campaigned, winning the election doesn’t grant unlimited authority.

The Trump administration has been confronted with numerous lawsuits during its second term. As of May, Minnesota’s Attorney General Keith Ellison had filed 23 lawsuits against Trump and his officials on various issues.

The protests, characterized as a “national day of rebellion,” aim to illustrate what democracy looks like in action, countering authoritarianism from cities to rural areas.
