Stephen A. Smith Reacts to Ryan Clark’s Firing at ESPN

Stephen A. Smith expressed his dissatisfaction with ESPN’s decision to fire Ryan Clark, stating he was “not at all happy” about it.

Clark, who had been a prominent NFL analyst for ESPN, was informed of his termination on Monday during a break in the broadcast of “NFL Live.” Executives wanted to ensure he heard the news directly, rather than from outside sources, which led to the decision being communicated during the show. He didn’t return after the break.

In a video on his YouTube channel, Smith explained, “I don’t know the details and honestly, I don’t care. My concern is for my brother, Ryan Clark, who I consider the best NFL analyst in America, is no longer with ESPN.” He added, “I can’t express how much it hurts.”

Smith and Clark frequently worked together on “First Take,” and he mentioned a fondness for debating with former NFL players. He had made it clear to his superiors that he disapproved of the firing.

According to Smith, ESPN had confided in him about the decision, explaining that they wanted to keep Clark but the financial situation was no longer under their control.

Smith also commented on the public’s reaction to Clark’s departure, revealing he had been cautious about correcting misinformation circulating about him. “I almost bit my tongue and got blisters because I refrained from going after people who don’t know anything about him,” he said.

While Smith disagrees with ESPN’s direction, he emphasized he doesn’t wish to disrespect his employer, noting that the days of the network hiring freely are “long gone.” He cautioned that more layoffs could come, reflecting on his own experience of being fired by ESPN in 2009, making it clear he felt vulnerable as well.

Clark was among several former players let go by ESPN, with others including Cam Newton and Bart Scott. He shared a message on X, expressing support to all those affected, saying, “I know how you are feeling right now because so many of you have poured your lives into that company. My hope is that this door closes and another opens for you. God bless you!”
