Stephen A. Smith Questions Funding for NYC Mayor Zoran Mamdani’s Plans

On Wednesday, Stephen A. Smith raised concerns regarding the financial backing for New York City Mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani’s ambitious proposals. He expressed skepticism, suggesting that the core supporters of democratic socialism might not be the ones who handle daily expenses.

In a recent episode of the Straight Shooter podcast, Smith, who mentioned his personal admiration for Mamdani, also shared his unease that the young, left-leaning candidate won the election. He conveyed worries over some of Mamdani’s statements, informing listeners, “I just want to know where the money is coming from.” It’s a valid question considering that many of Mamdani’s admirers aren’t those footing the bills, as he pointed out, adding a more personal touch by mentioning how this connects to familiar faces in his life.

Considering Mamdani’s proposed economic strategies, such as a 2% wealth tax and free public services like grocery stores and bus rides, Smith challenged their feasibility. He reflected on the potential repercussions of imposing higher taxes on the affluent in the city, stating, “Wouldn’t that just make New York less appealing for businesses and residents?” There’s a worry that such policies could push businesses to relocate, ultimately placing a heavier tax burden on those who remain.

On the topic of freezing rents, Smith was doubtful. He wondered if that would truly be achievable or if it might just lead to price increases due to a diminishing population. “So, tax revenue, where’s that coming from?” he asked, emphasizing the need to critically evaluate the practicality of Mamdani’s proposals.

Smith didn’t only express frustrations about economic policies; he also criticized Mamdani’s previous views on police funding. He stated he was “very concerned” about Mamdani’s comments advocating for defunding the police, insisting that he prefers having more officers rather than fewer. “I want cops on the New York City subways,” he added, revealing a more personal stake in public safety, shaped by his upbringing in the Bronx and Queens.

Mamdani has previously labeled institutions like the New York City Police Department as “rogue” and criticized them vehemently. These discussions have resurfaced as the new mayor prepares to take office amid varying public sentiments about his proposed changes.
