Stephen A. Smith Responds to Michelle Beadle and Kari Champion’s Criticism
Stephen A. Smith took the opportunity to address his former ESPN colleagues, Michelle Beadle and Kari Champion, during his latest episode of the “Straight Shooter” podcast. The tensions appeared to escalate after Beadle criticized Smith on social media, claiming he wished for her downfall after he endorsed Papaya Gaming.
In his response, Smith asserted he didn’t know Beadle well, stating, “You wanted my attention, I get it,” then expressed that any tension perceived was more her fault than his. He implied that her comments stemmed from her own interpretation of events, rather than his feelings towards her.
Beadle, who left ESPN in 2019, has been vocal about her lack of respect for Smith, especially following his announcement that her time slot on Mad Dog Sports Radio would be replaced by a new SiriusXM show.
She recently criticized Smith’s endorsement of Papaya Gaming, calling it “terrible” given ongoing allegations around the company.
Additionally, Champion joined the fray over the weekend, reflecting on her time hosting “First Take” with Smith and Skip Bayless. She brought up past controversies involving Smith and suggested he not be selective in whom he criticizes.
Champion urged Smith to maintain the same level of scrutiny across the board, referencing some of his previous comments and actions during her tenure at ESPN.
In a 2014 incident, Beadle had previously called out Smith regarding comments he made related to domestic violence, leading to a suspension for him. On his podcast, Smith responded to Champion’s remarks by calling her statements unfounded, asserting he had always supported her during her career.
He went on to claim he was instrumental in bringing Champion to ESPN, emphasizing that her departure was a personal choice. Smith added that he supported arranging meetings between ESPN and her, hoping to bolster her return to the network.
Despite the back-and-forth, the details of the discussions between him and Champion remain undisclosed, leaving some ambiguity in the ongoing tensions among the trio.
