Concerns Over AI Data Center Development in Louisiana

Stephen Wagley, a congressional candidate from Louisiana, acknowledged that voters are rightly worried about the development of AI data centers and stressed the importance of transparency from officials.

In a discussion on Breitbart News Saturday with Matthew Boyle, Wagley linked voters’ frustrations regarding Amazon’s drone deliveries to broader issues surrounding data centers. He noted that the community has learned, through their experiences with Amazon, the necessity of asking the right questions regarding these developments.

Wagley mentioned an Amazon facility in Baton Rouge, which has generally been well-received over the years due to prompt deliveries. However, he pointed out that recent experiments with drone deliveries have led to unexpected complications. While the concept seemed exciting at first, residents are now experiencing a higher frequency of drone flights, and some have expressed concerns over the noise. He noted an incident where a drone crashed, revealing they could weigh around 85 pounds—far heavier than many anticipated.

He shared that local residents, especially those living near the facility, have become increasingly frustrated with the drone activity. They are seeking solutions, questioning who to contact about the issue and the existing regulations regarding drone flights.

“It’s all a learning process for everyone, including the officials,” he said, “This ties into concerns people have about data centers. While many support economic growth, their enthusiasm is tempered by lessons learned from the Amazon drone situation. People need clarity and they want to know what questions to ask. There’s a call for transparency and accountability, especially since local officials often sign Non-Disclosure Agreements when negotiating with data center developers.”

Wagley further explained that the public is eager for information on various aspects of the data centers—such as their water usage, whether they will bring in workers from other states like California, and if they will create lasting job opportunities for local residents.

“I think the concerns I’ve heard from citizens are justified. They’re struggling to get answers because there’s a lack of transparency and accountability,” he added. “It seems pretty straightforward, and I believe we owe it to them to provide those answers.”
