AI-Powered Stethoscope Revolutionizes Heart Diagnostics

A new artificial intelligence-enhanced stethoscope can identify subtle variations in heartbeat and blood flow that the human ear might miss.

During trials at 96 medical practices, family doctors used the Eko Duo digital stethoscope, which listens to heart sounds and records an electrocardiogram (ECG). It employs an algorithm developed through extensive heart recording data to quickly arrive at a diagnosis.

Heart failure is an issue for over a million individuals in the UK. Alarmingly, more than 70 percent of cases are diagnosed only after significant events like a heart attack or stroke, even if some symptoms were present prior to that.

This updated device can diagnose heart failure, heart valve disease, and abnormal heart rhythms in a mere 15 seconds.

Dr. Sonya Babu-Narayan, a consultant cardiologist and clinical director at the British Heart Foundation, highlighted the advancement of the stethoscope. She noted, “This is a perfect example of how the classic stethoscope, created over two centuries ago, can be enhanced for the contemporary age. Early detection of heart failure is crucial because it often goes unnoticed until conditions are severe. With a timely diagnosis, patients can access necessary treatments that improve longevity and quality of life.”

The trial conducted by Imperial College London involved over 1.5 million patients presenting with symptoms like breathlessness or fatigue across 205 GP practices. At 96 of these locations, approximately 12,725 patients were evaluated using the new equipment, while those at other practices were examined with conventional stethoscopes. If high-risk patients were identified, further confirmation was provided through a blood test for a hormone known as BNP, alongside a heart scan.

Interestingly, those assessed with the innovative stethoscope were 3.5 times more likely to be diagnosed with atrial fibrillation—a condition that raises stroke risks—and nearly twice as likely to be diagnosed with heart valve disease.

Dr. Patrik Bächtiger from the National Heart and Lung Institute expressed amazement at the transformation of the stethoscope’s design, which has remained essentially unchanged for over two centuries. He remarked, “The capability of this smart stethoscope to provide results in just 15 seconds is remarkable. AI can rapidly indicate whether a person is dealing with heart failure, atrial fibrillation, or heart valve disease.”
