Stephen K. Bannon, a former adviser to former President Donald Trump, is expected to be jailed by Monday, July 1, after the Supreme Court rejected his request to remain behind bars pending the outcome of his appeals.
supreme court issued The statement was a one-sentence denial, saying simply that Bannon’s “application for release pending appeal” had been denied.
Bannon said: War Room John McClellan, host of the podcast “The Poison,” has filed an emergency appeal to stay his prison sentence for failing to comply with a subpoena from the Democratic-led Select Committee on January 6th, which was set up to investigate the January 6, 2021, riot at the Capitol.
The emergency appeal was addressed to Chief Justice John Roberts, who handles such requests from Washington, D.C., courts.
“The application for release pending appeal filed before the Chief Justice and referred by him to this court is dismissed,” the Supreme Court wrote.
Before being hired as CEO of the Trump campaign in August 2016, Bannon served as executive chairman of Breitbart News. He then joined the Trump administration as chief strategist, leaving that position in August 2017, before returning to Breitbart News and retiring in early 2018.
Bannon is Convicted He was indicted by a jury in October 2022 and sentenced to four months in prison for failing to comply with a subpoena from the special committee on January 6. The sentence was put on hold as Mr. Bannon sought to appeal the sentence.
In May, an appeals court upheld Bannon’s conviction, which runs from 2022.
Bannon becomes the second Trump administration official to serve a four-month prison sentence. Former White House counsel Peter Navarro was indicted on contempt charges for failing to comply with a Jan. 6 special committee subpoena and reported to prison in March to begin his four-month sentence.
In an interview with conservative journalist and commentator Tucker Carlson, Bannon said he was “not afraid” of “going to prison” or serving time as a “political prisoner.”
