Steve Bannon warns former X CEO Linda Yaccarino: ‘You can’t escape!’

Linda Yaccarino has stepped down as CEO, just two years after she took the reins of Elon Musk’s social media platform, which he purchased in October 2022. Musk appointed Yaccarino in June 2023, and shortly thereafter, the site underwent rebranding as X.

In a message on X, Yaccarino expressed her appreciation for Musk’s vision: “When @elonmusk and I first spoke about his vision for X, I knew it would be a lifelong opportunity to carry out this company’s extraordinary mission. I am extremely grateful for him to protect his freedom of speech, change the company, and leave it to me the responsibility to turn X into all his apps.”

Musk responded with thanks for her contributions. Yaccarino also received support from various conservative voices, including Megyn Kelly and Charlie Kirk. However, not all feedback was positive. Steve Bannon, who has been openly critical, promised to challenge her legally wherever she goes, derisively referring to her as “Elmo.”

Bannon and Musk appear to represent conflicting factions within the political landscape. While Bannon aligns with a more populist, anti-immigration stance, Musk seems to advocate for libertarian values that embrace free speech. Their rivalry has developed alongside discussions of influence in the context of Trump’s presidency. Interestingly, Musk, who is in conflict with Trump over various issues, is rumored to be contemplating the creation of his own political party, called the American Party. Meanwhile, those supporting Bannon have expressed discontent with Trump’s recent foreign policy moves, particularly regarding Iran.

Interestingly, Musk has recently distanced himself from Bannon, and Bannon has retaliated with accusations against Musk’s background, calling him “South African, not American.” Musk hasn’t held back in his response, labeling Bannon as having a history of wrongdoing.

Sidebar discussions aside, it’s evident Yaccarino has earned respect among many within the MAGA movement. She managed to restore trust and attract advertisers back to the platform—a significant achievement.

Mike Benz, a former State Department official, praised her efforts on X, highlighting her fight for free speech during a critical time. He acknowledged her efforts in engaging with governments, advertisers, and various stakeholders.

While it’s disheartening to see Yaccarino leave her position, the overarching struggle to maintain free speech on social media continues.
