Mets Owner Discusses Soto and Lindor Relationship
In a recent podcast, Mets owner Steve Cohen confirmed to The Post’s Joel Sherman and Jon Heyman that earlier reports of a rift between players Juan Soto and Francisco Lindor were accurate at one point, but the situation has improved. “Frankly, I think that was last year,” Cohen said, expressing his belief that the two are currently on much better terms.
Cohen stated, “I don’t see it as an issue anymore.” The conversation emerged after reports indicated that the relationship between Soto and Lindor had soured during the last week of the Mets’ disappointing 2025 season.
Former Mets manager Carlos Mendoza had previously maintained that the clubhouse atmosphere was professional and congenial, but later dismissed this notion. He suggested that the media was simply attempting to explain the team’s decline toward an 83-79 finish.
Cohen’s comments provide a fresh perspective amidst the Mets’ struggles, as discussions about the futures of various players intensify with a second straight season of potential playoff absence looming.
Nonetheless, Cohen seems confident that neither Lindor nor Soto will be leaving the team. With Soto having 13 seasons left on a 15-year, $765 million contract, which wraps up in 2024, and Lindor holding six years remaining on a 10-year, $341 million deal, Cohen believes they’re here to stay. “We’re lucky to have two players of such quality,” he added, feeling optimistic now that past issues have been resolved.
Despite their overall record of 36-50, both Soto and Lindor have only been able to play together for 13 full games this season. This might explain Cohen’s assurance that President of Baseball Operations David Stearns won’t be dismissed, even though the team is struggling and has a roster valued at over $320 million.
In a notable shift, the Mets decided to part ways with Mendoza, promoting Andy Greene to interim manager. Greene will have the advantage of coaching both Soto and Lindor, with the latter recently returning from a calf strain sustained on June 24.
