Steve Doocy Completes Route 66 Road Trip in Springfield, Missouri
On Thursday, Steve Doocy, co-host of “Fox & Friends,” concluded his three-day adventure along Route 66 in Springfield, Missouri, marking the historic highway’s 100th anniversary this year.
This stop was the last on his journey, which began in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and traversed through Kansas. Springfield is often celebrated as the birthplace of Route 66.
“It’s great to see everyone in Springfield today sporting Route 66 gear,” Doocy noted during the live broadcast.
As he presented from the route, local residents and car buffs gathered with their classic cars to honor the milestone. “I was surprised by how many people came together from all the towns we passed through. It’s kind of a big deal for these places,” he added.
Classic Mustangs lined the streets, showcasing their connections to Route 66’s rich history and culture. This occasion also featured former Missouri congressman Billy Long, who is on his way to becoming the next U.S. ambassador to Iceland. He emphasized the historical significance of Springfield during the broadcast.
“This is the birthplace of Route 66,” Long shared. “I was born here, and so was Route 66.” His commentary even included his own auctioneer style while recounting how the name Route 66 came to be. He explained that highway commissioners discussed building a cross-country highway, tossing around various potential route numbers before finalizing on Route 66.
The celebration in Springfield signaled the official start of events commemorating the highway’s centennial, with communities nationwide expected to join in throughout the year as America also celebrates its 250th anniversary.
Doocy’s road trip highlighted the enduring spirit of the people, places, and traditions that keep the essence of Route 66 alive nearly a century after its establishment.
