Steve Gelbs interrupted by fan in hilarious SNY Mets TV spot

SNY Mets reporter Steve Gelbs is known for occasionally causing food-related mayhem on air, and that was the case on Wednesday night during the Mets’ 5-3 loss to the Rangers.

And this time, his spot was joined by an unsuspecting guest.

During the second inning, SNY cameras zoomed in on Gelbs, sitting in a bleacher chair at Globe Life Stadium and eating a brisket sandwich.

The reporter on the scene was initially unaware that he was on camera while anchors Gary Cohen and Keith Hernandez mocked Gelbs from the comfort of the broadcast booth.

“What I’d like to see is if Steve can eat a bite of brisket and do a play-by-play drill at the same time,” Cohen joked, before Gelbs seemed to wise up to what was being said about him.

“I would look at it,” Cohen added.

Then Gelbs, still chewing, jumped up to the microphone and asked what Cohen had just said, as a discreet woman walked past the SNY reporter.

That’s when things started to go completely haywire: The woman thought Gelbs was talking to her, not realizing that Gelbs was on live television at the time and was actually speaking with his broadcast partner.

She stopped right in front of Gelbs and he had to explain to her what was going on.

“Oh no, [you]”No, I’m on TV right now and so are you,” Gelbs told the woman, who quickly ducked out of the camera’s view.

“There was a look of shock on her face,” Cohen said, while Hernandez laughed at the bizarre situation.

“And Steve is making friends wherever he goes and surprising the Texans.”

Gelbs later commented: X writes about the whole thing as “spreading TV time to the masses.”

The Mets, whose seven-game winning streak was snapped, will have Thursday off before opening a three-game series against the Cubs on Friday at Wrigley Field.
