Stephen Curtis Chapman Celebrates Mothers with New Song
Stephen Curtis Chapman sees a special quality in mothers—a unique gift they offer to the world. They’re busy yet somehow always fully engaged, radiating kindness, love, and compassion to those around them. In true artist fashion, Chapman has penned a song to honor the unyielding love of his mother, Judy Chapman, named The Speed of Love. A lyric video, featuring both personal photos and submissions from fans showcasing their mothers, debuted on May 1st.
This release coincided nicely with Mother’s Day, although Chapman emphasizes that it’s a heartfelt tribute suitable for any time of year.
At 83, his mother remains a source of beauty and sweetness. “She’s just a wonderful person,” Chapman expressed in an interview.
The song paints vivid scenes from his mother’s life: her dedication in a community kitchen, her calm presence at a flower shop, and her warm exchanges with neighbors. It begins with lines about her early mornings: “She wakes up at 6am and drives into the kitchen where her hungry heart is there. She fills your plates and makes you see you and believe… And the world passes by, but she just lives with a smile.”
“Love isn’t just slow and cold. It’s about living intentionally,” he reflects. Chapman believes there’s a miracle in being present for those around us, sharing the message that no one is alone—that there’s a divine presence who cares deeply.
Essentially, this song celebrates quiet acts of service, those that have the power to change the world without any fanfare. The final lines resonate with humility: “You won’t read about her in the headlines. The world may never know her name, but you might recognize her when you see her at the finish line.”
He describes it as a “story song,” and it came together effortlessly, hoping to inspire listeners through his mother’s example.
“She battled cancer about 25 years ago, going through some intense treatments, but by God’s grace, she’s still here with us,” he said. “She’s a bundle of energy. Even a year ago, when I was working on this song, her cancer returned, but fortunately, once again, there’s been no need for treatment.”
“My mother just keeps moving forward. Her joy comes from cooking and offering kind words. She interacts with everyone, stopping by to see friends, and that’s just as rewarding for her, I think. It really makes me reconsider how I approach life—living intentionally and quickly.”
