One of evangelical pastors' best known was removed from his ministry this week for what church elders called an “inappropriate relationship” with a woman. Steven J. Lawson, senior preacher at Trinity Bible Church in Dallas, Texas, was removed “effective immediately,” according to a statement from the elders posted on the church's website and social media accounts.
Lawson is president and founder of One Passion Ministries, a teaching fellow at Ligonier Ministries and professor of preaching at The Master's Theological Seminary.
“The elders of Trinity Bible Church of Dallas regret to announce that Steven J. Lawson has been indefinitely removed from all ministry activities at Trinity Bible Church of Dallas, effective immediately.” statement He said.
“Several days ago, the elders of Trinity Bible Church of Dallas were informed by Steve Lawson that he had been engaging in an inappropriate relationship with a woman. The elders have met with Steve and will continue to accompany and pray for him with the ultimate goal of his personal repentance. Trinity Bible Church of Dallas will no longer be paying Steve compensation.”
The elders requested prayers for all involved.
“In light of this, let us remember that we are all sinners and that Jesus Christ came into the world to save sinners, and He remains the head of the church, greater than any fallen man,” the statement said. “Indeed, Jesus Christ will continue to lead the church, including Trinity Bible Church here in Dallas, just as He has done ever since we began this work on January 5, 2018.”
“Since that time, the elders have focused on the primacy of Bible commentary compiled by various men who take the pulpit each week,” the statement said. “The Lord was building Trinity Bible Church of Dallas long before Steve became its lead preacher, and He will continue to build this church long after Steve Lawson or any other man. We ask for your prayers for the elders, our church, and for Steve and his family.” 1 Corinthians 10:12“Therefore let anyone who thinks he stands take care not to fall.”
Lawson had not released a statement as of Friday morning.
