Spielberg Donates to Van Der Beek’s Family After Actor’s Passing
Filmmaking legend Steven Spielberg and his wife Kate Capshaw made a notable donation of $25,000 to help the family of actor James Van Der Beek, who recently passed away at 48. Van Der Beek, known for his role in Dawson’s Creek, succumbed to colorectal cancer early Wednesday morning, leaving behind his wife and six children. In light of their escalating medical expenses, the family turned to a GoFundMe campaign for support.
By 3 p.m. PT on Thursday, contributions had exceeded $1.8 million, surpassing the initial goal of $1.5 million. Interestingly, early on Wednesday, the target was set lower at $550,000. As donations flooded in, organizers continually raised the bar. Within just 24 hours post-launch, support kept growing and, remarkably, the tally already exceeded $1 million by the time the page was created, as reported by Hollywood Reporter.
While Van Der Beek and Spielberg never collaborated directly, the actor held Spielberg in high regard, even displaying his movie posters in his bedroom. A notable scene in Dawson’s Creek featured Van Der Beek’s character reminiscing with a friend about reenacting scenes from Jaws.
Spielberg acknowledged his influence on Van Der Beek’s life, surprising fans during a reunion event in New York City last year with a heartfelt video message: “Dawson, you’ve made it. One day you might own Dawson’s closet.”
Other celebrities also joined in supporting Van Der Beek’s GoFundMe. Jon M. Chu, director of Wicked: For Good, contributed $10,000, while Oscar winner Zoe Saldana donated $2,500.
The GoFundMe campaign highlighted the challenges faced by Van Der Beek’s widow, Kimberly, and their six children, describing their situation as an “uncertain future.” The costs associated with James’ treatment and prolonged battle have left them financially strained. The family is striving to maintain stability and ensure their children can continue their education during this tough time.
“Your generosity will help us cover essential living expenses, pay our bills, and support our children’s education,” the statement on the GoFundMe page read. “Every donation, regardless of amount, will aid Kimberly and her family in finding hope and security as they rebuild their lives. Thank you for considering a gift to support them.”
