Stock Market Rises After Jerome Powell Suggests Possible Rate Cuts

Market Reaction to Fed Chair’s Comments

Stock markets experienced a notable surge on Friday, following comments from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell indicating a potential for interest rate cuts by the central bank.

In a morning address at the Jackson Hole Economic Symposium, Powell mentioned that central banks might swiftly adjust their target ranges. He noted, “It seems that the balance of risk is shifting.” After his remarks, the Dow Jones Industrial Average sky-rocketed by 903 points, which is an increase of about 2%—the highest gain on record, according to reports.

Meanwhile, the S&P 500 climbed by 1.6%, and the Nasdaq Composite rose nearly 2%. These moves were largely attributed to Powell’s speech.

During his address, Powell elaborated on the central bank’s strategy, stating that the framework aims to balance its dual mission effectively. He commented on the current economic state, saying, “In the short term, inflation risks have risen, while the employment landscape remains challenging.”

Powell also added, “With restrictive policies in place, we might need to reassess our approach to adjust for changing risks and outlooks.” He emphasized that decisions made by the Federal Open Market Committee are based on data evaluations and their implications for the economy.

Former President Donald Trump has been outspoken about his criticism of Powell. Recently, he accused the Fed chair of failing to reduce interest rates in past meetings, asserting that “there is no inflation and all indications suggest significant rate cuts are necessary.”

In a post on a social media platform, Trump remarked, “Someone should inform Jerome that it’s ‘too late’ and he’s damaging the housing market tremendously. Individuals are struggling to secure mortgages.” He concluded with a stern note expressing that the situation is indeed “too late.”
