Stock Market Update, Jan. 29: Microsoft Drops and Meta Rises

Today, the S&P 500 dropped by 0.17%, settling at 6,969.01. The Nasdaq composite fell even more, down 0.72% to 23,685.12, primarily due to struggles in the tech sector. Conversely, the Dow Jones Industrial Average saw a slight increase of 0.11%, reaching 49,071.56, close to an all-time high.

Among the heavyweights in tech, Microsoft experienced a significant decline, plunging 9.99% to $433.50. This loss amounted to $357 billion, marking it as the second-largest single-session drop noted by Bloomberg. On a somewhat positive note, strong performance from Meta Platforms helped mitigate losses across the broader market.

ServiceNow’s stock fell nearly 10% to $116.73, despite exceeding analyst expectations in its latest earnings report. Other software companies like Salesforce and Adobe are facing mounting anxiety regarding the potential impact of artificial intelligence on their livelihoods.

This morning marked a sharp downturn in stocks as investors processed Microsoft’s earnings from the previous day. Although results surpassed expectations, the Azure cloud’s performance fell short of investor hopes, further exacerbated by concerns about the high spending on AI initiatives.

By the end of the trading day, both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq managed to regain some ground, hovering near their highs. The decision by the Federal Reserve yesterday to maintain current interest rates provided a sense of stability, while Meta’s favorable fourth-quarter profits counterbalanced Microsoft’s downturn.

Meta not only exceeded expectations but also provided a positive outlook for the upcoming quarter. Unlike Microsoft, the worries surrounding AI spending were somewhat alleviated by robust cash flow from other ventures. In addition, Apple, whose earnings were revealed after market closure, surpassed forecasts thanks to tremendous demand for the iPhone.
