Storm takes the life of a South Korean climber, leaves hundreds trapped near Mount Everest

Tragic Storm Claims Life of Climber in Nepal

A climber from Korea has died in Nepal after being caught in a severe storm while attempting to summit Mera Peak, located south of Mount Everest. This incident has led to an urgent evacuation of hundreds of hikers trapped in the region due to the treacherous weather conditions.

The Nepal Mountaineering Association confirmed the climber’s death on Tuesday. He reportedly went missing over the weekend near the summit of Mera Peak, which stands at 21,250 feet. Fortunately, other climbers on the mountain have been reported safe.

The scene was dire, with heavy snowfall and rain affecting many hikers near Everest. One individual, known only by the surname Dong, shared with China’s Xiaoxiang Morning Herald that he had never encountered such a fierce storm, noting the combination of heavy snowfall and lightning.

By Monday evening, approximately 350 people had managed to descend safely, while over 200 others were directed to designated meeting spots, as detailed by China’s state broadcaster CCTV.

The stranded climber had been camping at an altitude exceeding 16,000 feet. For context, Mount Everest reaches an elevation of 29,000 feet and straddles the border between China and Nepal, with its southern side located in Tibet.

Meanwhile, in another part of China, rescue teams were active in the Killian Mountains of Qinghai after yet another storm on Tuesday. Tragically, one hiker succumbed to hypothermia and illness, while 213 others were evacuated from the area beginning Sunday.

According to reports from the official Xinhua News Agency, the surge in climbers in these remote areas has been attributed to promotions seen on social media, which perhaps encouraged more people to take risks.

The search and rescue operations commenced on Sunday, utilizing drones to assist in locating hikers trapped in Lao-Offgou within Menuan County. The challenging terrain, coupled with ongoing snowfall and rapidly changing weather, has complicated efforts to reach those stranded at elevations above 13,100 feet.
