Chakrabarti’s Congressional Bid Backed by Drag Queen Video

A billionaire from Silicon Valley has thrown his weight behind Nancy Pelosi’s former House seat, gaining traction through a video featuring a well-known drag queen.

Saikat Chakrabarti, 40, made his campaign announcement on Friday, later posting a promotional video featuring “Peaches Christ” on social media.

“San Francisco has a unique moment. This upcoming election could decide whether we maintain the status quo or send someone to Washington willing to truly challenge the existing system responsible for our crises,” she stated in the video.

During the event, there were laughs as they introduced plans for the Drag Me To Vote competition, set to happen in San Francisco on April 4th.

However, reactions from online observers were mixed. Many questioned whether Chakrabarti, who previously served as chief of staff to the controversial Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, was genuinely committed to the campaign.

One critique read, “Hey, what’s going on here? No one is making you do this—how about focusing on affordability?”

Another person commented, “It’s a bit much to be roped into backing a billionaire when there are other viable candidates not tied to wealth.” Others expressed frustration over the lack of support for women of color also aiming for office.

Chakrabarti’s path to Congress won’t be easy. He’s set to compete against San Francisco City Supervisor Connie Chan and State Senator Scott Wiener in the upcoming midterm elections, especially following Pelosi’s announcement of her resignation in November.

Critics have cited his wealth and political inexperience as significant concerns, particularly in a city facing deep homelessness issues and steep housing costs. Wiener notably criticized Chakrabarti for allegedly spending too little time engaged with local communities, indicating, “My opponent seems intent on leveraging his considerable wealth to secure a Congressional seat.” He added, “While I may not be a billionaire, my decades of service in San Francisco truly matter.”

Chakrabarti transitioned from a tech background to politics, famously working as Ocasio-Cortez’s chief of staff and being a key figure behind the Green New Deal. His political involvement took a turn in 2019 when he resigned amid an investigation into potential financial misconduct related to two PACs he founded aimed at supporting progressive candidates.

Ultimately, the FEC concluded no wrongdoing occurred, and no charges were filed.
