Strange UFO sightings over Catalina Island revealed in government documents

Catalina Island, a popular tourist destination in California famous for its clear waters and connections to Hollywood, has also garnered attention as a site for UFO sightings. Recent documents released by the White House reveal a series of intriguing alleged encounters with unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP).

The specific encounters involving Catalina Island are part of a larger collection of UAP-related documents made public by the Trump administration on Friday. UAP stands for “Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena.”

A group of reporters, including those from The Post, received a briefing from senior government officials ahead of the document release on Thursday.

One air force intelligence report outlines an incident from August 25, 1952, where three Boy Scouts hiking near Camp Fox observed a “silver-colored object” that moved “faster than a conventional jet.” They couldn’t determine the object’s altitude, speed, or distance, but the weather conditions were clear during their sighting.

Interestingly, a critical part of the report seems to be a missing sketch of the vehicle, which was supposedly drawn on the original documentation but has not been located despite extensive searches in old government archives.

Another document included is a handwritten letter dated May 1, 1947, describing a different sighting. The letter recounts how the writer and his wife, along with a schoolteacher, witnessed six individual objects in the sky one night. Later, they saw four more objects, all moving in the same direction.

This letter, signed by Percy E. Mackey, suggests interest in further communication regarding “flying disks, saucers etc.” However, authorities concluded that there was “insufficient data for evaluation” concerning this sighting.

This report was released during a time when the Roswell incident in New Mexico was capturing the nation’s attention.

The documents related to Catalina Island are part of a broader initiative by the Trump administration to disclose information on UAPs. This is the seventh batch of records made available, with further files anticipated.

Additionally, historical accounts mention that on July 8, 1947, three Army Air Force veterans observed six “flying discs” flying in formation over Avalon, approximately at 1 p.m., until they vanished over East Peak. One witness, Alvio Russo, estimated their speed to be around 850 mph.

Bob Jung, a former aerial photographer, claimed he witnessed and photographed one of the objects. An image of a purported UFO over Catalina was published by the Los Angeles Examiner, though it raises some questions due to the nighttime visibility of stars in the photo despite the daytime setting of the sighting. This inconsistency has yet to be addressed.
