Have you ever noticed that you constantly have to turn up the volume on your TV because it sounds like the actors on screen are talking in a whisper, but every time there's an action on screen, the sound on your TV becomes deafening? Have you ever felt like this? You're not alone.
This is one of the most common problems people have with TV audio, but luckily you can change some settings on your TV to make conversations sound clearer.
Read on for 3 easy fixes to make your TV sound better.
1. Check your TV's audio settings

What is artificial intelligence (AI)?
Most modern TVs come with presets that you can adjust on the fly to make them sound better depending on whether you're playing games, watching a live concert, or watching a slow drama. Contains audio settings. Too much bass often makes dialogue in TV shows and movies difficult to understand. We recommend checking your TV's preset audio settings to see if they can make the audio clearer. Most TVs have standard modes for movies, music, and TV audio. You can find your TV's audio presets by going to Settings on your remote and selecting Sound.
Some TVs also have audio presets designed explicitly for interaction. Check if your TV's audio settings have settings for “Dialogue,” “News,” “Speech,” or even “Speech Boost.” Any of these three can help convey TV dialogue more clearly. Also, consider disabling surround sound or bass boost settings. These settings can raise the bass too much and mask conversational audio.
If you have access to your TV's EQ settings but still have trouble hearing dialogue on the TV, it may be worth turning up the treble. This is a simple fix that improves the audio quality without sacrificing too much of the non-dialogue sound in movies and TV shows.

2. Adjust dynamic range compression

Dynamic range compression, or “volume leveling,” helps tailor audio sound to individual needs. Leveling the volume reduces the gap between the loudest and quietest sounds on screen, especially in action movies, where dialogue is often much quieter than the action sequences that precede it, making on-screen dialogue more It becomes easier to hear and understand. Volume leveling or dynamic range compression settings are located in your TV's audio settings. Most TVs allow direct access from the remote control.
My TV has a volume control, which I often use when watching TV at a low volume late at night. It helps you understand everything easily without having to blast the speakers loud enough to wake others up. If you watch cable TV, it's also a great way to maintain audio levels when commercials are playing.

The default speakers built into your TV aren't the best. Some high-end TVs come with a built-in soundbar, but you can also get the best experience with your own separate speakers or soundbar. If you've followed the two tips above and still have trouble hearing dialogue in movies or TV, it might be time to consider and invest in a set of speakers. Or, if you need a single unit, sound bar.
I prefer using a soundbar with a TV over speakers. That's because soundbars often come with built-in subwoofers that boost bass to make action scenes and music sound more immersive. Additionally, modern soundbars are sleek and can easily blend into your home decor. Many also support advanced audio technologies such as Dolby Atmos, which provides a surround sound experience without the need for multiple speakers throughout the room.

4. Connect headphones to TV
If you can't hear conversations clearly while watching TV, plug in headphones to improve audio clarity and provide a private listening experience. Here's how to easily connect both wired and wireless headphones to your TV.
Wired headphones:
Check the 3.5mm jack. Most TVs, especially older models, have a headphone jack on the back or side panel. If your TV has this port, just plug in your wired headphones and start enjoying audio right away.
Using the adapter: If your TV doesn't have a headphone jack and has RCA outputs (red and white ports), you can use an RCA to 3.5 mm adapter to connect your headphones.
Wireless headphones:
Bluetooth connection: Many modern TVs support Bluetooth. To connect:
- Put your headphones into pairing mode (usually by holding the button until the light flashes).
- Go to your TV's settings menu, find the Bluetooth option, and enable it.
- Select and pair your headphones from the list of available devices.
Bluetooth transmitter: If your TV doesn't have Bluetooth, consider using a Bluetooth transmitter. This device connects to your TV's audio output (such as a headphone jack or RCA port) and wirelessly transmits audio to your Bluetooth headphones.
Media streamer: If you use a device like Roku or Apple TV, your headphones often support Bluetooth connectivity, so you can listen privately through those devices instead.
Plug in headphones to enjoy clearer conversations and make it easier to catch up on your favorite shows and movies without disturbing others.
