Tragic Accident Claims Life of NYU Graduate
A talented New York University graduate lost her life following a boat crash into a pier in Boston Harbor, according to officials.
Elizabeth “Lizzie” Dunkert, 24, who previously played soccer at Union College in Schenectady, was on a recreational boat that collided with Pier 4R, located near Logan International Airport, at around 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday, as reported by Massachusetts State Police.
The boat’s operator, 40-year-old Lawrence See, along with Dunkert’s two friends, both 23, were transported to Massachusetts General Hospital with injuries that, fortunately, were not life-threatening.
On Wednesday evening, Dunkert and her friends were in the Seaport area of Boston when they took a boat from Freedom Boat Club without permission, as stated by the club.
“The boats were operated without authorization and outside of the club’s control after hours,” the club said, emphasizing their cooperation with the authorities.
Boston EMS shared images on social media showing a broken center console found near the pier following the incident.
Despite challenging conditions, including darkness and slippery rocks, paramedics were able to locate the crash site and began treating the injured. They worked alongside the Massport Fire Service to safely extricate all four individuals.
Dunkert, originally from Andover, graduated from Union College in 2024, where she was a standout athlete.
“Lizzie was an exceptional student-athlete who had a significant impact during her time at Union University,” remarked Union University spokesperson Philip Wajda. “Her passing is a significant loss for our campus community, and we extend our sympathies to Lizzie’s family, friends, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.”
The circumstances surrounding the accident continue to be investigated by the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office.
