Students Speak Out After Teacher’s Controversial Post
Three high school students spoke out at a recent school board meeting after a Barrington High School teacher was found to have posted a TikTok video celebrating the assassination of political activist Charlie Kirk.
The teacher is currently on administrative leave, amid an investigation regarding the video that apparently expressed a lack of sympathy for Kirk after his murder. The students are advocating for the teacher’s dismissal. One student voiced their concerns, stating, “As young people, it’s important that we share our viewpoint, especially since this teacher is someone who impacts our future.” They further expressed their disapproval of the violent expression associated with Kirk’s assassination, emphasizing that he shouldn’t be honored in such a way as he had never harmed anyone.
Another student added, “Charlie’s kids shouldn’t have to grow up without their father, and his wife shouldn’t have lost her husband. It’s unacceptable that someone would celebrate this.” They argued that, while Kirk might have had differing opinions, it didn’t justify the violence he faced, and suggested the teacher should indeed lose his job over the incident.
According to reports, the TikTok video—now deleted—suggested that the teacher had no compassion for Kirk, citing his political views as a reason. The teacher had questioned whether supporters of Kirk would condone violence against the shooter.
In defense of their stance, one student said, “As citizens of a great nation, we hold ourselves to higher standards; we cannot support or even tolerate violence.” They emphasized that educators who endorse such violence should not be in positions that influence young minds.
The third student mentioned their discomfort with having a teacher who apparently supports violence, saying, “We need more positivity in this world, and we shouldn’t be glorifying actions like this.” They concluded their remarks by invoking a blessing for Kirk and expressing sorrow for his family.
The school district has appointed an independent investigator to look into the matter. As of now, the teacher’s TikTok account appears to be private. Reports suggest that opinions among parents at the meeting were divided.
Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, was shot during a speaking event at Utah Valley University, which led to backlash against individuals who seemed to celebrate his death.
