Charges Filed Against Students for “Takeover” Events in Rehoboth Beach
Four college students are in legal trouble after allegedly organizing a series of disruptive “takeover” events in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.
The local police department confirmed that crowds swarmed the beach and boardwalk on Tuesday following the circulation of unauthorized takeover advertisements online.
The incidents, attributed to underage drinking and illegal drug use, led to a significant police presence, resulting in multiple arrests.
Students from Delaware State University—Xander Nichol, 19; Angeline Crouville, 21; Eric Barnett, 21; and Keyon Scott, 22—are charged with aiding and abetting a riot along with second-degree conspiracy.
A spokesperson from Delaware State University acknowledged the situation, stating, “The university is aware of an issue involving an individual identified by the Rehoboth Beach Police Department.” They emphasized that this is a law enforcement matter outside of university affairs and directed further inquiries to the police.
The police department mentioned on social media that officers were present early on, responding with minimal notice. As the situation escalated, additional resources from the community were called in.
Concerns for public safety prompted a swift police response, and it was noted that this isn’t the first time the group had promoted a takeover event in the area. Rehoboth Beach, a favored destination within a reasonable distance from major cities, has experienced four of these illegal gatherings since April.
So far, three of the suspects have turned themselves in, while Barnett remains unaccounted for. Police are not actively searching for him at this point.
Lieutenant Mark Sweet of the Rehoboth Beach Police Department assured the public that there’s currently no risk and stated they will keep an eye on future events to ensure safety for residents and visitors alike. He added, “We will take the necessary steps to maintain peace and order in the City of Rehoboth Beach.”
City Manager Taylor Tedder praised the police department’s professionalism in handling the situation, stating, “We are extremely proud of our police department and continue to work hard to keep Rehoboth Beach safe… Rehoboth Beach is safe and open this Memorial Day weekend and all year round.”
