Concerns Over Federal Health Care Funding Discrepancies

A report titled “Bureaucracy’s Threat to Local Health Care,” obtained by Breitbart News from Defend Forgotten America, suggests that federal health care regulators treat funding programs in Republican-leaning areas differently from those in Democratic-leaning regions.

The organization conducted over 85 evaluations of local hospitals nationwide, including at least 63 in areas that backed President Donald Trump in the 2024 election. They expressed concerns regarding the oversight by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), stating that this could have significant repercussions for rural hospitals and their communities.

According to Defend Forgotten America, rural hospitals are under financial strain due to staffing shortages, rising inflation, and reimbursement challenges. They pointed out that many facilities are at risk of closing across the country.

The report claims that while CMS has greenlighted substantial Medicaid financing in several Democratic-leaning regions, like New Jersey and Colorado, applications from conservative states such as Florida and Ohio are subjected to prolonged scrutiny. For example, Florida’s hospital-led payment program took nearly a year to be approved, while a similar proposal from Ohio has been pending for an extended period as well.

“The data reviewed for this report shows worrying trends,” the report notes.

It highlights the challenges faced by local health systems, indicating that Florida lost five rural hospitals, with three more transitioning to emergency-only care. Between 2011 and 2023, 57% of Florida’s rural hospitals ceased providing obstetric services, while 51% of rural hospitals in Texas stopped offering chemotherapy. Moreover, over a quarter of Louisiana’s rural hospitals are deemed at risk of closure.

In response, Defend Forgotten America has urged CMS to speed up the review process for pending waiver and funding applications, establish consistent approval standards, and ensure fair treatment for communities irrespective of their political affiliations. They also called for Congress and federal regulators to safeguard the local provider tax structure that many rural areas depend on for their healthcare systems.

As of now, CMS has not responded to the allegations presented in the report.
