Study reveals E. coli issues in water across 21 major airlines

Study reveals E. coli issues in water across 21 major airlines

Concerns About Airline Water Safety

Passengers might want to reconsider ordering beverages or washing their hands while flying, according to a recent analysis. A three-year study conducted by the Center for Food and Medical Longevity in New York City analyzed over 35,000 samples from airline water systems collected between 2022 and 2025.

This study reviewed both large and regional airlines, ranking them based on contamination issues, E. coli detection, maintenance practices, and how often the water systems are cleaned.

Bottled Water Might Not Be the Safer Option

Water scores above 3.5 are deemed relatively safe, while those below indicate a risk of health issues. The analysis revealed that there were 32 E. coli violations across 21 airlines during this period.

Delta Air Lines topped the rankings for water safety, with Alaska Airlines following closely behind. Conversely, Spirit Airlines, JetBlue, and American Airlines landed at the bottom of the list.

Charles Platkin, who conducted the study, mentioned that while much of the data relies on self-reported information, airlines often claim compliance with federal regulations. “Compliance should be the floor, not the ceiling,” he noted.

Platkin added that the investigation assessed whether airlines fulfilled necessary minimums to ensure passenger safety. He remarked that while travelers shouldn’t have to fear the water quality for drinks or when washing hands, these should be basic expectations.

Simple Precautions Recommended

Nicolette M. Pace, a registered dietitian from NutriSource in New York, emphasized the importance of basic precautions during flights. She recommends that passengers fill reusable water bottles after clearing security or buy bottled water, mentioning that using hand sanitizer is preferable to using the aircraft’s tap water.

She cautioned that consuming any contaminated water, even in small amounts, can disrupt digestion and weaken immune defense, particularly for children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems.

Spirit Airlines stated that it has a comprehensive testing and maintenance program for its inflight water systems, adhering to EPA guidelines. The airline expressed its commitment to the health and comfort of its customers, noting that it continuously reviews its procedures to ensure progress in safety measures.

American Airlines claimed full compliance with EPA requirements for its drinking water program. It further mentioned that a recent EPA audit found no significant issues, and they are evaluating the analysis from the Center for Food and Medical Longevity to explore potential improvements for passenger safety.

JetBlue, in its response, described safety as its primary responsibility, indicating that it offers bottled purified water on every flight. They follow specified processes for preparing beverages to maintain safety and conduct regular checks of their water systems to ensure quality.

Ultimately, the findings highlight a growing concern about the cleanliness of airline water systems and suggest that passengers might want to take extra precautions during their travels.
