Study reveals Yale professors give 97.6% to Democrats, none to Republicans

Yale Professors Favor Democratic Donations

A recent article highlighted that professors at Ivy League institutions, specifically Yale University, largely supported Democratic candidates in their donations last year, contributing almost nothing to Republicans. According to data analyzed by the Yale Daily News, out of over 1,000 Federal Election Commission filings identifying their occupation as “professor,” a staggering 97.6% of the donations were directed to Democrats, leaving just 2.4% for independent candidates or organizations. Interestingly, while there were some Republican donations, none of the individuals identified as professors.

The statistics might not be surprising to many. For instance, Mark Peterson, a history professor, noted that professors often donate to parties that align with their values and interests. “It wouldn’t be shocking to see unions support the party that backs them against their adversaries,” he remarked. He also expressed concern about the 1,099 donation records, clarifying that while he technically made 56 donations, these were monthly contributions spread over a year, which doesn’t represent an overwhelming amount.

Peterson pointed out that faculty are generally not wealthy individuals but contribute in manageable ways to support candidates they believe support their work. The challenging financial landscape, especially since the Citizens United ruling, compels politicians to continually seek funding, making regular small donations crucial for campaign survival.

Furthermore, he reflected on the broader political environment, stating that Republican politicians have often attacked higher education, making it clear why many educators would not support them. After all, college professors are likely to back political parties that align with their professional ideals.

Coinciding with this discussion was a study from the Buckley Institute, revealing that 27 of Yale’s 43 departments lacked any Republican faculty members. The report noted that nearly 83% of faculty members are registered Democrats, while only a tiny fraction, less than 3%, identify as Republican.

Yale University previously indicated its commitment to recruiting faculty based on academic merit rather than political affiliation. They emphasize that their focus is on nurturing the next generation of scholars and leaders, striving for excellence in education irrespective of personal beliefs.
